Back to reality… (LOOOOOOOONG post)

June 7th, 2011 Permalink

My wonderful new wife and I tied the knot 3 months back in March. The wedding was truly amazing, attributable mainly to my wife’s incredible diligence and planning. And you know…with a wedding comes a honeymoon! Ours ended up being 3 weeks, divided between Peru (Machu Picchu), Ecuador (the Galapagos Islands), and Costa Rica (Arenal, Monteverde, and Guanacaste). What an amazing trip! I am NOT ready to get back to work. At least the pics help me remember what a ridiculously awesome vacation it was!

We started out the trip in Peru, visiting Cusco and the Incan ruins at Ollantaytambo.

Amanda & Chad: (Wind)e-session

May 3rd, 2010 Permalink

Congrats to Amanda and Chad! They’re a great couple getting married in New Orleans in October and needed a few shots for a save-the-date card. We were thinking some night shots on Canal St. would be awesome. However, the weather forecast told us to expect rain all weekend. Ugh. Fortunately, the rain stayed away long enough for us to get out to Canal St. on Saturday night. Little did I know that although it was going to be dry, winds were 25mph – enough to knock over a light stand (even without an umbrella). This made this shoot a little more challenging, but we got through it just fine!

We’re such suckers…

As most of you know, Tanquery (Tanq for short) is our baby. He’s an integral part of the family and we spoil him to pieces. Constant affection, bits of dinner under the table, and new toys to destroy are all part of his daily life. He’s got it made. I’ve always said that if I was to be reincarnated, I’d want to be reincarnated as a house pet – this is EXACTLY the reason why. Last weekend, Tanq received an influx of new toys. Matthew, my 2yo nephew, wanted to give Tanq his stuffed frog. Tanq miraculously got a stuffed penguin from my mom. And to top it off, a new basketball doggie toy was gifted by Bella. He’s totally got it made.

…and I’m jealous.

Danae and Jason

October 3rd, 2009 Permalink

Better late than never, huh? I had the pleasure of attending Danae and Jason’s wedding several weeks back. Given my ridiculous schedule, I haven’t gotten a chance to post the pictures from their wonderful event until now. It was held at Hakone Garden, a beautiful Japanese garden in the Saratoga hills. While many couples go for the standard wedding fare, Danae and Jason took a step outside the box and made the wedding incredibly “them.” A candy bar (filled with so many goodies that my dentist probably shouldn’t know about), a first dance consisting of the robot, a Nintendo Wii playing Rockband, and a photobooth with ridiculous props were some of the amazing touches they planned out. The day ran without a hitch and was easily one of the most relaxed and personal weddings I’ve seen. Congratulations to the happy couple!

When in Rome…

July 10th, 2009 Permalink

My board exam was easily the most ridiculous and mentally-draining experience I have ever had to date. 8 hours of testing + 336 questions = ugh. However, as a reward to Clara and myself, an Italy trip was in order. I was there to relax and soak up the atmosphere, sure. But I was also there to take advantage of the scenery. Italy is a beautiful place with such an amazing history. We visited Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, and Venice.

ROME: Rome was great! We happened to catch it during a slow tourist season, so it wasn’t packed at all. Our travel agent (Colleen from Go-Today.com) snagged us the Hotel Napoleon for a great price. All the luxuries of a regular hotel, in a nice compact package! It was right next to the subway so transportation anywhere in the city was a piece of cake, and the concierge was a great touch. We spent a day touring the Vatican thanks to MyVaticanTour.com. Our tour guide, Kelsey, was great and led us through the gauntlet of tourists in the museum, and then on to the Sistine Chapel. After that, we moved on the St. Peter’s Basilica, which was the most amazing building I’ve ever seen. The pictures cannot do justice to the sheer size and the amazing detail in every square inch of the building. Our nights in Rome were often filled with aimless wandering, photographs, and gelato. We were incredibly fortunate to stumble upon the Coliseum one night; we were simply there to take photos of the exterior, but they were offering a very rare night tour! SCORE! I’ve never seen the inside of the Coliseum at night before, but it was one of the eeriest things I’ve seen yet.

FLORENCE: After figuring out how the Italian train system works, we moved on to Florence. This was a really cool city filled with tons of high end stores. Too bad I’m broke and I’m not trendy. Florence is perhaps the most influential art city in all of Italy. The world-renowned Ufizzi is there, along with the Accademia which houses Michelangelo’s David. Despite being a photographer, I’ve decided that I am not a fan of museums. I don’t know what it is, but all paintings start looking the same after about 10 minutes. Maybe it’s just me. :P But the street lights illuminating the river at night were gorgeous.

CINQUE TERRE: Hands down, Cinque Terre was the most relaxing place I have ever been in my life. We stayed in Vernazza, which gets a little touristy during the day but was absolutely amazing at night. We met a really cool couple from Colorado, Mark and Sarah. Mark is a blossoming photo nerd, so he and I had plenty to talk about. Clara and Sarah both shared the same disappointment in their men, so they got along just fine as well. It is a quaint beach town filled with pizza, pasta, and wine. There are numerous sights to be seen nearby, and even a dude walking through the train station in a white speedo (you had to be there). The stray cats all beg at the side of the dinner table like dogs…it was hilarious! In all, Vernazza was amazing. Imagine soaking up the scenic hikes during the day, and then sitting on the pier under the stars at night, with a bottle of wine (per person). If anyone is getting married in Cinque Terre, I will shoot your wedding for free…just get me there. :D

VENICE: And then on to Venice. Oh what can I say about Venice…everyone seems to love Venice. Except for me. I am absolutely convinced that Venice was mapped out by a blind man. There is no clear path from one location to another. Navigating through the city is like getting stuck in a concrete maze. Even with a map, it is incredibly difficult because the street signs are horribly lacking. When you’re trying to sightsee and can’t get from location to location, that can make for a frustrating day. Regardless of the flustering navigation, you gotta admit that the city is quite pretty. I just need a tour guide next time.

All in all, an awesome trip that I would gladly do over again. More pics inside the link!

Chicago – Mr. and Mrs. Paik/Baby Nia Ou

July 10th, 2009 Permalink

Ok, it’s been a crazy summer. I’ve been studying my little booty off (ok, big booty), but I made sure to carve away some time to visit Chicago for two very special reasons. Jessica, a great friend of mine since middle school, was getting married! And secondly, two of my other best friends just had a baby! Make sure you click the continuation link under the pictures to see more!

Let’s give this a shot…

Well, I decided to give my blog a freshening up. Since it’s different, I’m renaming it to blag (for no other real reason). If you’re looking for old pictures, never fear…I’ll be steadily transitioning my blog to my blag. But for now, I’ll just make you poke around all the new photos. Drop me a comment to let me know how you like the new format. :)

Motown R&B Meets the Big Easy…

February 17th, 2009 Permalink

Rachel and Brian from Detroit. Motown…R&B…get it? HA! Yeah yeah, I know…it was a terrible joke. But hey, I’m a corny guy…

Anyway, the story of this beautiful couple is a rather interesting one – of all the ways to meet, Rachel and Brian were introduced on a blind date set up by their friends. When was the last time you ever heard of a good blind date, let alone one that ended up in a marriage? Absolutely amazing…what a lucky couple! In preparation for their big day, we headed out to the river for an engagement shoot, only to be thwarted by cold/wind/rain. Mother nature simply was not on our side, but they were troopers and made the best of it!

It really amazes me how fast these little ankle biters (my nephews) grow. I remember when I was scared to even touch Matthew because I didn’t want to break him. Now he has quite the personality and has learned how to say ‘NO’ in 3 different languages. And David is growing up to be such a happy little rugrat. I especially love how his orange hoodie just pops.

Adrienne and Eric

January 8th, 2009 Permalink

Just before Christmas, I had the pleasure of shooting Adrienne’s and Eric’s wedding in New Orleans. Adrienne and Eric were a wonderful couple to work with – absolutely ecstatic to start their new life together and deeply in love. That made my job ridiculously easy. :) It was a beautiful, intimate ceremony at First Presbyterian Church with a portrait session in the French Quarter afterwards. Lugging a light stand with an umbrella around the Quarter is no easy task – good thing I brought some muscle to help me out (thanks Clara). Enjoy the photos…I know I had a blast taking them. And a huge congrats to the new couple!
